The five things worth your time in Tam Coc are the rowing-boat trip through three river caves, Bich Dong Pagoda on its cliff, the climb to the Mua Cave viewpoint, Thung Nham bird park at dusk, and cycling the flat lanes between the rice fields. From Tam Coc Garden Resort they are all within 9 km: Bich Dong is 1.8 km, Thung Nham 2.7 km, the Tam Coc boat wharf 4.3 km and Mua Cave 8.9 km by road.
Two full days covers them at an easy pace. Trang An and the Hoa Lu temples are further out and fit a third day.

The five that matter
Row through the caves on the Ngo Dong River
The classic Tam Coc trip: a two-person rowing boat from the wharf in Van Lam, along the Ngo Dong River through three low caves and back, past rice fields that sit almost level with the water. The 2026 ticket is 250,000 VND per adult with the boat included, and the trip takes 1.5 to 2 hours, plus a tip for the rower. Go when the wharf opens to share the river with fewer boats.
Climb the cliff at Bich Dong Pagoda
Bich Dong is a pagoda in three levels: a lower hall at the foot of the mountain, a middle shrine in a cave mouth and a small upper shrine on a ledge, reached by stone steps and a dark, low passage. A stone bridge crosses a lotus pond at the entrance. It is the closest sight to the resort and an easy first ride.
Watch the river bend from Mua Cave
The viewpoint above Mua Cave is a long stone stairway up a karst ridge to a small pavilion, with the Ngo Dong River winding through the paddies below. Entry rose to 150,000 VND per person on 1 April 2026. It is hot and exposed at midday from May to September, so aim for the first or last hours of light.
See the birds come home at Thung Nham
Thung Nham is a bird park and nature area of lakes, caves and karst 2.7 km from the resort. The draw for many visitors is the late afternoon, when flocks of herons and egrets return to roost. Allow a couple of hours and bring repellent.
Cycle the lanes between the paddies
Flat concrete lanes link the villages, so a free resort bike is enough. Tam Coc town is about 15 minutes away, the wharf 18. The rice is young and green from February to April, golden in late May and early June.
A two-day plan from Tam Coc Garden
Day 1: boats and the pagoda
Cycle to the Tam Coc wharf for an early boat, ride on to Bich Dong Pagoda on the way back, then lunch in Tam Coc town and an afternoon at the pool. Take a taxi to Thung Nham for the late-afternoon birds.
Day 2: the view and the garden
Taxi to Mua Cave for sunrise or the first opening hour, breakfast back at the resort, then a slow middle of the day with the spa or the cooking class. Spend the late afternoon on a bike loop through the fields.
With a third day, add the Trang An boats and the Hoa Lu temples to the north. The resort’s location guide lists distances to all of them.
Without leaving the garden
Tam Coc Garden runs a free morning yoga session for guests and lends bikes for free. Paid extras include Sati Spa (10 am to 8 pm), a cooking class that starts with catching shrimp in the stream, a guided hike with a boat section, a boat picnic for two and craft workshops in bamboo weaving and paper-making. The facilities guide has the hours.
Questions about things to do in Tam Coc
How many days do you need in Tam Coc?
Two full days covers the Tam Coc boats, Bich Dong, Mua Cave, Thung Nham and a bike loop without rushing. A third day lets you add the Trang An boats and the Hoa Lu temples. One night works only if you arrive early and accept missing the late-afternoon sights.
Can you see Tam Coc without a tour?
Yes. Boat tickets are sold at the wharf, Bich Dong and Mua Cave are open to walk-in visitors, and the lanes between them are easy to cycle. A tour mostly adds transport from Hanoi and a guide; staying overnight nearby removes the need for both.
What is there to do in Tam Coc in the evening?
Not much beyond dinner. Tam Coc town has family restaurants and a few bars on its main street, about 3.6 km from the resort; the resort has its own restaurant and Longan Bar, open until 10 pm. Book a taxi for the way back, because the last stretch of lane is dark at night.
Is Tam Coc good for families with children?
Yes, if the children are happy sitting in a boat for up to two hours and cycling short distances. Bich Dong and the bird park are short outings; Mua Cave’s steep stairway is harder for small children in the heat.
